It was built by Emperor Jahangir, in the honour of his mother Begum Mariam-uz-Zamani (Rajkumari/Maharani Heer Kunwar of Amber, also called 'Maharani Jodha Bai' in popular culture),wife of Mughal Emperor, Akbar. The mosque is located inside the old Masti Gate and is one of Lahore's first big mosques. It was temporarily turned into a gunpowder factory by Maharaja Ranjit Singh and due to this reason the mosque became known as ''Barudkhana Wali Masjid''.
